New General Manager

The Able Trust board is very pleased to welcome Karen Goffe as our new General Manager

Karen has extensive experience in Mental Health, Suicide Prevention and Employment services, as well as the allied sectors of social services, justice and education.

She has worked as both as a service provider and service developer which has included Field Work, Management, Leadership and Governance roles. Most of her roles have included working directly with families; consulting, assessing, listening, valuing and supporting them. She also has many relationships and networks across the wider region that will support her in this management role.

We truly believe Karen has the passion, vision, creativity and strong leadership skills to build on the existing foundation, to transform this organisation into a functional, integrated, Centre of Excellence across the Otago/Southland region.

Following is Karen’s introduction to stakeholders in her own words:

“I am very much a “people person” and would ideally prefer to talk with you all face to face as a first introduction into the role of General Manager. Unfortunately timing is against us and I believe that it is only fair and right that you have an idea of who you will be working with.

So I have tried to highlight the following information about my previous and current working life and how it fits in with the philosophy of Able.

Mental Health:

  • PACT Southland – Manager
  • Public Health South: Mental Health Promotion Adviser – focus Mental Health, Stigma and Discrimination and Suicide Prevention
  • Southern District Health Board – Māori Health Manager (physical and mental health)

Suicide Prevention: produced/wrote key documents:

  • Southland All Age Suicide Prevention Gap Analysis
  • Southland Suicide Prevention Plan 2009-2012
  • Southland Suicide Prevention Action Plan 2010-2012
  • Wakatipu Postvention Plan (consultant on working group)

Employment – Service Development – Whanau Ora - Justice

  • Into Employment MSD contract
  • Whanau Ora -TPK contract
  • Restorative Justice – Ministry of Justice contract
  • Supported Youth Accommodation – CYF’s and MSD

I have had the opportunity to meet with some of you before at the Vision/Mission/Values planning days in Alexandra and Balclutha. However I didn’t have a chance to interact with everyone and there are new staff who have since come on board who I have yet to meet. I look forward to sharing my journey with you all and spending time with each of you within the next month”.

Karen Goffe

Here’s to our continuing journey supporting families/whanau and friends affected by mental illness.

We thank all stakeholders for their patience and support during the recruitment process which took some time to ensure it was transparent and robust. We believe the process has produced an excellent manager with the skills and determination to transform Able. We look forward to working with Karen and embarking on a new positive phase in the development of this organisation.
