Up to 30% of children in New Zealand have a parent who has experienced mental illness
Children whose parent is suffering from mental illness are at increased risk of poor health and social outcomes, with increased rates of suicidal ideation later in life.
What we must also recognise is:
The majority of parents with mental health or addiction concerns do NOT abuse their children
Most parents with mental health or addiction concerns genuinely want what’s best for their children.
Able Minds’ signature programme, Children Understanding Mental Illness and Addiction (CUMIA) works with tamariki aged 6 to 12 years by providing support from a neutral adult, with whom they can discuss their significant whānau members’ illness, gain greater understanding of that illness, express their feelings, and develop important self-regulation strategies. With a breadth of experience in the field, our staff are here to educate and support your tamariki in a safe, yet fun and understanding environment. Essentially, we create safe spaces where healthy communication and sharing can occur. Dependent on each individual’s needs, this activity-based, interactive programme can be offered either as a one-on-one session, or in groups of children with similar whanau experiences.
