Able Minds holds the Supporting Parents Healthy Children (SPHC) contract, as the primary link between Te Whatu Ora’s SPHC programme and our community.
Did you know:
Up to 30% of children have a parent who has experienced mental illness
50-70% of people who are experiencing mental illness are parents.
Children whose parent is suffering from mental illness are at increased risk of poor health and social outcomes, with increased rates of suicidal ideation later in life
These children have remained an invisible population within New Zealand.
Supporting Parents – Healthy Children (SPHC) aims to mitigate these sobering facts, by achieving better health outcomes for children and their parents. Able Minds works with core agencies (e.g. schools and other social services ) to highlight best SPHC practice, how to recognise potential vulnerabilities within a family unit, supporting parenting skills and capabilities, and ultimately for children to build resilience.
This service works towards key outcomes such as:
The Children:
Better understand their parent’s mental illness|
Can communicate with parents about the mental illness (shared family understanding)
Know they are not to blame / are not responsible
The Parent:
Gains insight, awareness of early warning signs & capacity to manage mental illness
Receives treatment, support and greater parenting capacity
